Crookham Company’s Georgia trials looked great this year where 4021* 7091* and 4022* all look strong. All are characterized by a healthy plant with a hearty bulb to increase yield. They also have a strong root system that creates solid foundations,  making these hybrids grower friendly. Keep an eye out for OSYF10-4021, OSYF12-7091, and OSYF22-4022 as they will make a great addition to your onion portfolio.

The Class of 1925 and Joe Albertson

Submitted by kbc on Sun, 06/16/2024 - 18:11

George Crookham Jr. and  Joe Albertson (the founder of Albertson’s grocery stores) were in the Caldwell High School class of 1925 in Caldwell Idaho.  Joe used to work at Crookham Company after school shelling popcorn with George and Frank Crookham. His yearbook quote was, “It will be a bright old world someday, but it’s all wrong now.” Joe’s generation had been through World War I. This ended in 1918 but the Spanish Flu epidemic started that same year. In one Caldwell area, they lost one in seven of their neighbors.

The future of sweet corn in the Southeast is looking great at the Crookham Florida Trials. Of note is Globetrotter, known for its taste and holding power. (Globetrotter’s healthy plant stand is seen being harvested in the video link below). The new release Duration, a yellow sweet corn and a sister variety to Globetrotter also continues to deliver above expectations for the shipping market. Coming into view is a hybrid that has been performing well, year after year. CHBF18-1453 is an item to keep on your radar.

Taking a look back at a mechanical harvest of Xanadu in the Midwest this year. Xanadu, and most of the Nirvana Series, now have the new sh2i gene. This gives these varieties better emergence and vigor, while still delivering the same extraordinary juicy bite and flavor that has consumers coming back for more. The Nirvana Series sweet is a favorite with growers and consumers on several levels.

Defender has a high percentage of single centers, good ring separation, and uniformity in bulb shape with a rich bronze colored scale. Defender can store for the long term with 6+ months of storage giving growers the highest degree of market flexibility. https://www.crookham.com/products/us/defender

The New sh2i Seed

Submitted by Tech Support on Sat, 11/04/2023 - 12:27

It has been 20 years since Crookham began the introgression of the naturally occurring sh2i shrunken sweet corn into our portfolio. We needed to get the technology right first and once accomplished went beyond our lab results and worked with growers in regional and international trials before bringing it to the market. Having done our homework, Crookham Company is proud to bring the sh2i seeds to the market for 2024. (Click for printable PDF)
